Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) telah mengumumkan nominasi untuk The 87th Annual Academy Awards. Pengumuman nominasi ini dilakukan oleh Chris Pine, J.J. Abrams, Alfonso Cuarón dan presiden AMPAS Cheryl Boone Isaacs di Los Angeles. Birdman dan The Grand Budapest Hotel memimpin perolehan nominasi dengan total 9 nominasi, sementara Boyhood yang sebelumnya banyak dijagokan, hanya meraih 6 nominasi, kalah dari The Imitation Game yang meraih 8 nominasi. Tahun ini, hanya 8 film yang menjadi nominator Best Picture. Satu hal yang membuat tanya, mengapa meninggalkan dua slot yang masih bisa diisi untuk film-film lain yang berkualitas?
Beberapa kejutan yang terjadi diantaranya, masuknya nama Marion Cotillard di kategori Actress in a Leading Role, masuknya Bradley Cooper di kategori Actor in a Leading Role, Nightcrawler dan Gone Girl yang tersingkir dari persaingan, serta tidak masuknya Birdman ke dalam kategori editing.
Marion Cottilard memang pantas mendapatkan nominasi ini. Aktingnya dalam Two Days, One Night banyak disebut sebagai penampilan terbaiknya pasca kemenangan Oscarnya melalui La Vie en Rose. Di kategori Actor in a Leading Role, Bradley Cooper ternyata menjadi aktor ke-5 yang menempati slot nominasi. Sebelumnya, nama-nama Steve Carell (Foxcatcher), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton (Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)), dan Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) sudah banyak disebut akan mengisi 4 slot yang ada; dengan kemungkinan besar Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) atau David Oyelowo yang mengisi slot ke-5. Namun ternyata AMPAS mencintai penampilan Cooper di American Sniper, yang memang jauh dari kata buruk.
Kejutan datang dari Whiplash yang ternyata menjadi dark horse sesungguhnya di musim penghargaan ini. Dirilis pertama kali awal tahun lalu, pemenang Grand Jury Prize di Sundance Film Festval ini meraih 5 nominasi, termasuk untuk Actor in a Supporting Role, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, dan Best Picture. Sementara Nightcrawleryang digadang-gadang akan menyeruak diantara film-film lain yang sebelumnya mendominasi, justru harus tenggelam dengan hanya mendapatkan 1 nominasi di kategori Original Screenplay. Selain Nightcrawler, Gone Girl juga harus mengubur impian mendapatkan nominasi Best Picture dan "menyerahkannya" kepada American Sniper. Gone Girl juga tidak mendapatkan nominasi di kategori Adapted Screenplay dan juga Directing; dan harus berpuas hanya dengan meraih 1 nominasi untuk Rosamund Pike.
Foxcatcher yang momentumnya meredup menjelang musim penghargaan ini juga harus berpuas dengan hanya 4 nominasi, tanpa nominasi Best Picture. Namun Foxcatcher menempatkan 2 aktornya di kategori Actor in a Leading Role (Steve Carell) dan Actor in a Supporting Role (Mark Ruffalo). Selain itu, Bennett Miller juga mendapatkan nominasi Best Director. Dengan tidak dinominasikannya Foxcatcher di kategori Best Picture, ini memutus rantai prestasi Bennett Miller, dimana dua filmnya dulu dinominasikan di Academy Awards secara berturut-turut (Capote dan Moneyball).
Lalu bagaimana dengan Selma? Selma yang beberapa waktu lalu gagal mendapatkan pengakuan dari serikat pekerja industri film karena kealpaan Paramount, mendapatkan dua nominasi untuk Best Original SOng dan Best Picture. Namun Ava DuVernay (sutradara) dan David Oyelowo (aktor) gagal dinominasikan.
Mungkin kejutan terbesar di ajang Oscar kali ini adalah tidak masuknya The LEGO Movie sebagai nominator Animated Feature Film. Hal ini membuat jujur saja membuat kami terkejut, karena The LEGO Movie bukan hanya salah satu film animasi terbaik tahun 2014, tetapi juga salah satu film terbaik 2014. The LEGO Movie memang mendapatkan nominasi untuk Original Song. Namun tidak masuknya film ini di kategori Animated Feature Film tentunya merupakan sebuah kekecewaan dan tanda tanya besar.
Lalu, beberapa rekor tercatat tahun ini. Yang pertama, Meryl Streep mendapatkan nominasi Oscar ke-19 untuk aktingnya sebagai penyihir jahat di Into The Woods. Rekor ke-2 datang dari cinematographer Roger Deakins yang mendapatkan nominasi Oscar-nya yang ke-12 melalui film Unbroken. Patut dicatat, untuk 11 nominasi yang pernah ia dapatkan, ia belum pernah menang satu kalipun. Lalu ada Robert Duvall, dimana pada usia 84 tahun, ia menjadi nominator tertua sepanjang sejarah Oscar di kategori akting pria.
Acara The 87th Annual Academy Awards akan diselenggarakan pada 22 Februari 2014 (23 Februari waktu Indonesia) di Dolby Theater, Hollywood & Highland California. Neil Patrick Harris akan menjadi host acara tersebut. Berikut adalah daftar lengkap nominasi Oscar ke-87.
