Setelah SAG-AFTRA mengumumkan nominasi SAG Awards ke-21 tadi malam, hari ini Hollywood Foreign Press Association mengumumkan nominasi Golden Globe Awards ke-72 di Beverly Hilton Hotel, California. Pengumuman nominasi dilakukan oleh bintang film Underworld Kate Beckinsale, nominator Golden Globe Peter Krause, Paula Patton, dan pemenang Golden Globe Jeremy Piven.
Tahun ini tidak ada kejutan yang benar-benar besar di nominasi Golden Globe. Jake Gyllenhaal yang mendapatkan momentumnya di SAG Awards kembali dinominasikan di kategori Best Actor - Drama atas perannya sebagai jurnalis lepas psikotik di film Nightcrawler. Begitu juga Jennifer Aniston yang tampaknya makin mantap di kategori Best Actress - Drama melalui perannya di film Cake. Sementara Robert Duvall mendapat pengakuan atas aktingnya di film The Judge melalui kategori Best Supporting Actor. Aktris Julianne Moore kali ini berkesempatan meraih dua penghargaan melalui aktingnya di film Still Alice dan Maps to the Star.
Mungkin kategori yang paling mengejutkan (walau tidak terlalu) adalah Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical dimana film independen Inggris Pride, yang baru memenangkan British Independent Film Awards, masuk sebagai nominator Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. Sementara kejutan lain datang di kategori Best Director, dimana nama Wes Anderson dan Ava Du Vaenay menjadi nominator. Namun di tengah banyaknya sutradara dengan hasil karya yang luar biasa tahun ini, tampaknya nominasi yang mereka dapatkan memang sudah sepantasnya. Di lini layar lebar secara keseluruhan, Birdman memimpin perolehan nominasi dengan 7 nominasi, termasuk untuk Best Picture - Comedy Or Musical, Best Director, Best Actor - Comedy Or Musical, dan Best Screenplay. Perolahan ini diikuti oleh Boyhood dan The Imitation Game yang meraih 5 nominasi.
Golden Globe Awards ke-72 akan menganugerahkan Cecil B. De Mille Award kepada George Clooney atas karirnya di dunia film baik sebagai aktor, sutradara, maupun sebagai produser. Sementara itu Miss Golden Globe untuk penyelenggaraan ke-72 ini adalah Greer Grammar, putri dari aktor Kelsey Grammar.
